Harsha Bhogle shared several key lessons during his Distinguished Alumni Lecture at IIM Ahmedabad, recently. It's a 1:50-minute video available in YouTube.

These are the top lessons shared by Harsha Bhogle with the students.

1.      Importance of Hard Work: He emphasized that success is primarily the result of consistent hard work and dedication. There are no shortcuts to achieving one's goals. Develop a strong work ethic by consistently putting in the effort required to excel in academics and internships. Set clear goals and work diligently to achieve them.

2.      Humility: Bhogle stressed the importance of humility, even when achieving success. Staying grounded and acknowledging one’s roots can help maintain perspective. Regardless of your achievements, remain humble and approachable. Recognize the contributions of others and stay connected to your roots, which helps build meaningful relationships.

Humility plays a significant role in achieving and sustaining success for several reasons:

2a. Fostering Relationships: Humility helps in building strong, meaningful relationships with colleagues, mentors, and clients. Being approachable and down-to-earth encourages collaboration and teamwork, which are essential in any professional setting.

2b. Continuous Learning: A humble mindset leaves room for growth and learning. When individuals recognize that they don’t know everything, they are more open to feedback, advice, and new ideas, which are crucial for personal and professional development. Bhogle highlighted the need for lifelong learning and adapting to changes, encouraging students to remain curious and open to acquiring new skills.

2c. Maintaining Perspective: Humility allows successful individuals to stay grounded. It helps them recognize their achievements while remembering the contributions of others and the journey they undertook to reach their goals, preventing arrogance from taking root.

2d. Resilience to Criticism: Humility encourages individuals to accept criticism constructively rather than defensively. This resilience is important in adapting and improving one's skills and performance.

2e. Gaining Respect: Humble individuals tend to earn greater respect from peers and superiors. This respect can lead to more opportunities, collaborations, and a positive reputation in the industry.

2f. Balanced Confidence: Humility helps strike a balance between confidence and modesty. A humble person can promote their abilities without appearing boastful, which is often more appealing in a professional context.

By embracing humility, individuals not only enhance their chances of success but also create a positive impact on their work environment, encouraging a culture of respect, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

3.      Embrace Challenges: He spoke about the significance of facing challenges head-on and learning from failures, as these experiences contribute to personal and professional growth. Frame Challenges as Opportunities. When faced with challenges or setbacks, approach them as learning experiences. Reflect on what went wrong, seek feedback, and use that knowledge to improve and adapt.

4.      Passion and Authenticity: He encouraged students to pursue their passions and be true to themselves, as authenticity resonates well in any field and leads to fulfilment. Identify what you are genuinely passionate about and align your career choices with those interests. Engaging in work that you love contributes to greater job satisfaction and success. Stay true to your values and beliefs in your professional life. Authenticity helps build trust with colleagues, clients, and employers, making you more memorable and respected.

5.      Networking and Relationships: Bhogle discussed the value of building and maintaining relationships, stressing that connections with people can open doors and create opportunities. Start networking early by attending industry events, joining professional organizations, and connecting with alumni. Focus on building genuine relationships rather than simply seeking favours.
