Before We Begin: A Pre Counselling Note for Parents and Young People
Career Counselling at India Career Centre

A career decision deserves more than a quick answer.
Choosing a stream after Class 10, selecting a course after Class 12, deciding on a college, considering education abroad, or changing career direction can be challenging. These decisions involve interests, abilities, financial considerations, family expectations, opportunities, and uncertainties about the future.
At India Career Centre, our objective is to help young people and their families examine these factors thoughtfully, explore relevant alternatives, and make better-informed decisions.
1. What is career counselling?
Career counselling is a structured conversation designed to understand your situation, explore relevant options, examine the factors influencing your decisions, and identify possible next steps.
It is not simply about recommending a course, college, examination, or profession. Two students with similar academic marks may have different interests, strengths, priorities, financial circumstances, and aspirations. Their career decisions need not be the same.
Our approach begins with understanding the individual rather than fitting the individual into a predetermined career path.
2. What can you expect from a session?
Depending on your situation and the questions you bring, a session may involve:
Understanding your current position: Discussing your academic background, interests, concerns, aspirations, and circumstances.
Exploring alternatives: Examining relevant courses, careers, educational pathways, or other possibilities.
Questioning assumptions: Looking beyond marks, popular career choices, social pressure, and the idea that there is only one safe or successful option.
Examining trade-offs: Considering aptitude, interest, cost, duration, employability, further education, and flexibility.
Identifying next steps: Clarifying what requires further research, discussion, preparation, or action.
The discussion will be guided by your specific needs. Not every session will cover every aspect.
3. What happens after the session?
The conversation does not end when the session concludes.
After every session, participants receive a detailed, personalised post-session note with practical ways forward.
The note captures the key aspects of the discussion and helps students and parents revisit the alternatives considered, reflect on important points, and identify practical next steps.
It serves as a written reference to support further thinking and action after the conversation. Its content is tailored to the questions discussed and the individual's circumstances.
4. What should parents and young people bring to the conversation?
Please come prepared to share your questions, concerns, and expectations honestly.
Young people should feel comfortable expressing their own interests and uncertainties, including views that may differ from those of their parents.
Parents bring valuable perspectives on family circumstances, financial considerations, and practical constraints. At the same time, the young person's interests, abilities, motivation, and willingness to pursue a particular path deserve careful consideration.
There is no need to arrive with all the answers. Being willing to explore questions openly is more important.
5. What does the session fee represent?
Career counselling is not merely the purchase of a recommendation. It is an investment in a process of examination, discussion, and decision support.
A career decision can influence years of education, substantial expenditure, and future opportunities. The purpose of counselling is to help you think through such decisions more systematically not to suggest that every family must choose the most expensive course or that paid counselling is essential for every decision.
The value of a session lies in how well it addresses your actual concerns and helps you understand your options, uncertainties, and possible next steps. The personalised post-session note also gives you something concrete to revisit after the discussion.
6. What career counselling cannot promise
It is important to have realistic expectations.
Career counselling cannot guarantee admission to a particular institution, a job, a salary, professional success, or a completely risk-free decision. Educational and employment outcomes depend on many factors, including individual effort, changing opportunities, institutional requirements, market conditions, and circumstances beyond anyone's control.
Nor should a counsellor make a life decision on behalf of a student or family.
Our role is to help you examine available information, understand the choices before you, and approach your decision with greater clarity.
7. Is one session always enough?
Not necessarily.
Sometimes a focused conversation is sufficient to clarify a question or identify the next step. In other cases, further research, assessment where appropriate, comparison of alternatives, or continued mentoring may be useful.
The need for additional support depends on the complexity of the decision and the individual's circumstances. It should emerge from the discussion rather than from an assumption that everyone needs a long-term engagement.
8. What have other students and parents experienced?
Choosing a career counsellor is an important decision. You may find it helpful to hear from students and parents who have previously engaged with India Career Centre.

We encourage you to read these experiences as one source of information while deciding whether our approach to career guidance is right for you and your family.
A shared responsibility
A useful counselling session requires participation from both sides.
The counsellor brings experience, questions, frameworks, and an independent perspective. The student and family bring their personal context, concerns, priorities, and knowledge of their own circumstances.
Please feel free to ask questions, seek clarification, and discuss any doubts about the recommendations or the reasoning behind them.
The ultimate objective is not to make the decision for you. It is to help you make your decision more consciously, with a clearer understanding of the alternatives and their implications.
We look forward to a thoughtful and constructive conversation.
